During the past nine years, DonorsChoose.org is has been revolutionizing the way in which we think about funding for public education. Instead of relying on slow, bureaucratic, perpetually under funded governments to provide funding for basic school projects, DonorsChoose intervenes to empower anyone to fund educational projects of their choice across the United States.

It’s as simple as it sounds: teachers submit proposals for classroom project materials, donors choose a project to support and students in need send a thank you note. It’s a smart, convenient and rewarding way for anyone to make a tangible difference in a student’s life and a no-nonsense way to take control of our public educational needs, right now.

To date, donors across all 50 states have donated over $30 million (wow!) to over 1.8 million students in need. Projects funded at DonorsChoose have supplied over 1.2 million hours or instruction and homework.  Here is a great documentary about the cause:

We think it’s a pretty neat way to support what we at SocialEarth consider a necessity- education.
