bac3JJA company that focuses on doing good will have increased employee engagement. And employee engagement helps companies retain top talent. Almost 60 percent of employees who are proud of their company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) are engaged at work, according to Double the Nation, which works with schools and non-profit organizations to increase fundraising.

Corporate volunteering is part of employee engagement, one of the most common activities within CSR. Some companies are better at encouraging corporate volunteering. Bacardi, the maker of spirits, is one of those companies.

Bacardi, the largest privately held spirits company in the world, is partnering with Surfrider Foundation’s Miami chapter this year to restore the beach dune and preserve the ecosystem of Miami Beach’s coastline. Dozens of Bacardi employees have teamed up with ecology experts and Surfrider Foundation volunteers to remove large patches of an invasive and non-native plant called scaevola. The plant originates Indian and Pacific Ocean region; removing it from the dune allows native species to repopulate. The team has also removed plastic debris and litter.

Bacardi employees took part in the dune and beach restoration project as part of the company’s annual corporate responsibility month community service volunteer program, called Spirit for LIfe, Caring Together. This year marked the program’s third consecutive year. As part of this year’s program, employees also planted 26 oak and mahogany trees with the American Forests and Neat Streets Miami/Million Trees Miami at Amelia Earhart Park. Over the last three years, Bacardi employees have helped plant almost 100,000 tree plantings across the U.S. in partnership with American Forests.

Bacardi employees are encouraged to care for the environment. At Bacardi Limited’s worldwide headquarters in Bermuda, employees get around campus and the community on bicycles. The initiative is part of the company’s environmental initiative, Good Spirited: Building a Sustainable Future. The bicycles are popular with employees, Clara Fay, Director of Corporate Affairs, for Bacardi in Bermuda said in a statement. The non-profit Bermuda National Trust recognized Bacardi for its bicycles initiative by granting it an Awareness Award for advocating green programs.

Bacardi both measures employee engagement and awards it. The company measures employee engagement through a biennial survey that tracks performance in certain area, including advocacy. Bacardi also has targets in place to improve the scores on its next survey. It rewards employees engaged in environmental sustainability through its annual Bacardi Limited Good Spirited Awards program. This year marked the program’s third year in a row and took place in during Earth Month in April. The company has five different award categories and awards trophies for each category made from recycled oak.

Robust corporate volunteering initiatives like those of Bacardi help companies retain employees by keeping them engaged in the workplace and help the environment. It’s a win-win for companies and for the planet.
