Over 1 million Los Angeles County residents confront hunger or food insecurity and this year alone, $5 Billion will be cut from SNAP (Food Stamps). “Los Angeles is the epicenter of hunger,†says Lisa Pino, SNAP (Food Stamps) deputy Administrator, “If we can eliminate it here, we can eliminate it anywhere.â€
These hard facts have driven many startups to get creative about offering economic relief. Among them include Swipes for the Homeless,a student organization founded in UCLA that encourages students to donate unused dining hall points to those facing food insecurity, and filmanthropos, a Los Angeles-based production company that specializes in multiplatform storytelling for causes, philanthropies, and corporate CSR initiatives.
filmanthropos and Swipes recently teamed up to create a short web-based video geared towards raising awareness about the Swipes initiative. Released last week, the story of these two startups teaming up and their creative outcome garnered press on Forbes.
